What a fantastic Day!!!!

SPDA Places in the top ranks once again!

Event Synopsis:

The Corvette Club events have been known for fast and open courses, this event did not fail to fulfill the expectations. The course was laid out in an open and flowing manner, typical of the Corvette Layouts. Of course, Corvette Layouts are designed to exploit the virtues of “America’s” muscle car, meaning Tons of V8 Power, some encroaching 500 hp, low and wide stance and superb handling. Were the Corvettes the only ones to exploit this course, only the official results will show. Needless to say, speed and agility were the order of the day. In spite of the controversy (read on), the day went without a hitch, and 5 full runs were had by all with some fun runs thrown in.

The Weather:
Forcasts earlier in the week were for “Rain with chance of Thunder Storms”. True to the ability of “The Weather Network and Pulse24.com, they couldn’t be farther from the truth. Though the day threatened to open up on the 85 competitors, not a drop of rain fell upon the event. Net result was Sunny with cloudy periods with temperatures ranging from 18 - 26 degrees throughout the day, with a slight breeze coming from the east.

Registration:
Registration opened at 8:30 sharp with Tony Kloosterman (SPDA) manning the registration booth. Joining him in the registration process was Timo Lapella (spelling). Cost for the day, $35.00. The only complaint for the registration process was that it took too long to complete, and the drivers meeting what 1hr behind.

The Contraversy:
Series competitors were concerned with the way previous Corvette Club Events were being run, particularly in the way marshalling duties were performed. Some mentioned being abandoned at the marshalling station for extended periods, causing them to miss their runs, while others complained about the attitude of Corvette Club members. Details of the conversations can be found here: Solo2 Forum Thread. Fortunately for all the participants to the event, none of these issues manifested themselves. The theme of the day was “Fast and Fun”. The event ran smoothly except for a delayed start time.

The Course:
This was one of the few course layouts that could not be walked without a course map, or a tour guide. Lots of interesting twists and turns (pun) proved challenging for most of the competitors, there were lots of O/C’s (off courses) and shortcuts being taken, not to mention other creative lines. The course was divided in 2 legs, and 2 cars were on the course at any given time. This allowed for an accelerated throughput of competitors. This course was fast, really really fast, almost as fast as anyone would want to go in a closed course layout (NOT). Cudos to the course designer for putting together a challenging course without being tight. Hopefully others can learn for this layout and more courses can be designed for both Fast and Flowing designs.

Leg A:
Front the start box: If you stage correctly in the start box, the first 75 meter acceleration point could be done in a straight line. 75 Meter straight into a 45 degree left sor 10 meters, then another 10 degree jog to the left, then a 30 degree right going into a laneway with a 90 degree right. This is where lots of competitors cooked the entry and tried to brake as late as possible. Including our own KerryL, who took out a whole family of cones. From the 90 degree right hander, it went into a straight run for about 100 meters, into a pin cone for a 180 degree return into a carousel with a false braking point. Into another 180 degree turn around with an entry and offset exit gate, to a sprint to the first slalom (non existent) then off to the next slalom, which was located about 150 meters away, needless to say there was some serious speed being built up here, next slalom was a 20 degree dogleg to the left, another 100 meters, over crest, then another straight sprint into a deceleration area before a gated skidpad type of turnaround into a 90 degree left, towards the Leg B:.

Leg B:
This leg was not as complicated, from the crossover, a fast 25 meter sprint into a 270 degree left hand skid pad style turn around, then a fast 120 meter sprint into an offset gate. Into a 90 degree right hander and another sprint to a 100 degree gated left hander which leads to the stop box.
Noteable Battles:
Luca P and Mike A, this time, Mike A prevailing again. Seems as if Luca was too sleepy for the concentration required for this event. Pictures to follow! Another noteable battle: FSP, the heat has been turned up between Tod F, Wedge, and KerrL for 2nd place in FSP, these 3 remain close.

COMP regional #4Team SPDA Autox once again, placing high in the classes. Special thanks to the Sponsors for making things happen: Japanese Auto, Marino’s Fine Cars, Bully Clutch, Auto Cosmetics, Sign Express Williams Performance Friction, Wheels Direct, and Toyo Canada!
