 Regional 1
The season kicked off to the roar of competition in Picton Ontario. This event is held on an old WWII airbase utilizing the taxi way and runway. What can be said about this event that has not already been mentioned? What a fantastic day, 30 percent of participants to this event were Subaru’s mostly from SPDA. Along the mix was a lonely Mitsubishi EVO VIII sporting Hoosiers. This day looked like it was going to be a fierce competition between all the AWD cars. As the day progressed track temperatures increased along with the heat of competition.
The convoy met up at Kennedy Commons Mall and left on time bright and early in the morning, arriving at 7:30 am sharp at Picton Airfield.
The Weather: The night before Regional 1, the weatherman forecasted thunderstorms forming over the Picton Area, but luckily none of that showed up, and it remained in the mild 28 – 32 degree temperatures throughout the day.
The Track: The layout was a medium speed layout with extremely tight layouts slowing down the competitors just before the stop box.
From the start line: 30 degree left to 20 meter straight into a 40 degree tight 3 cone right hander (triangle layout) into a slalom approximately 19 meters apart, the 5th cone being used as a pin turn. Into a 40 meter straight into a bus-stop into a 70 meter high speed straight going into a 30 meter radius left hand turn, into a tight offset gate slalom, to a right hand turn around, into another series of offset gate slaloms, lock to lock turns into the stop box.
Regional 2
The venue was at Mosport DDT utilizing the top half of the actual DDT. This event was put together by OMSC, no controversies year as the top half of the track was used. The participants were numerous and again SPDA competitors made up 30 percent of the lineup. Competition was hot, matching the 35 degree weather.
The convoy convened once again at Kennedy Commons Mall and promptly left on time to arrive at DDT by 7:45 am. Lots of time for setup and course walks. Aside from delays in course setup, competition started approximately 45 minutes behind schedule. The day went off without a hitch, the only casualty that day would be a battery from the stop box timing head, splitting as the yellow cobra used it as a stopping aid.
The Weather: Regional #2 presented a different environment.. We were cursed / rewarded with temperatures averaging 35 degrees all day, with temps at 7:00 am hovering around 28 degrees. The parking area was soft a molasses, and jacks sunk readily into the tarmac in the morning. HOT HOT HOT was the order of the day, along with the competition.
The Track: Venue held at the DDT using the top half of the track. The start line was located at the north east entrance to the DDT. From the start line: 30 meter straight into a 4 cone slalom spread apart at 19 meters, going into a left hand 20 meter radius sweeper, into a 10 meter straight, going into a 100 degree right hander into a 30 meter straight, into a 90 degree left, to a 90 degree right, into a 90 degree left, into a 50 meter straight going into a 90 degree left and into a 90 degree right to a 8 meter straight, going into 90 degree left into a 90 right, going into a 20 meter straight, going into a left hand 5 meter radius left hand sweeper, into a 75 meter chicane with a slight right, into an offset island into a 20 degree left to the stop box. Average times approx. 55 seconds.
Notable Moments SPDA once again placed high in all the classes, with SPDA Pro and Development teams representing in the top 3 of each of the classes represented.
Tashko beating TonyK and PeteL at Picton, and a broken rear differential for the venerable WRX. Switching ties in Regional 2 resulting in 1.7 seconds improvement in times. V710’s baby!
