To change the oil or not to change the oil... what 's the latest thinking?

And if so, too soon to switch to synthetic? Or is there no such thing?

Thoughts? ;-)

Mike, I'm interested to know more as a general rule, rather than vehicle specific.... ;-) :-D

Never too soon to change the oil, but yes it's too soon to go to synthetic. If it was my car, I'd be changing the filter and putting in Castrol GTX 10W40 right now. Canadian Tire has it cheap. Depending on how many KM's you'll have when you'll do your first track event, maybe another change to Castrol GTX 20W50.

P.S.: Being that Linda Epp just wrote me an Email about your membership status, I at least know what brand it is. ;-)

I didn't. Much is said about factory oil and its fantastic properties, and some say it is regular dino, and some have tested and said it is regular, and some have tested and discovered extra lube etc.

I considered all this and decided since Subaru is the company warranting this car, and more people have damaged their engines by "monkeying about" with synthetic than running what is specified by the manufacturer I am running Dino for regular daily driving, changed at the manufacturer's schedule.

Now, track days, I run thicker.

10w40 is not the approved weight for this car in spring.

Just so you know, it's a myth that you can't run synthetic right from the get go....it's just more expensive as you should still change the oil every 2000-3000 kms for the first 10,000kms for break in.

Alot of new vehicles (BMWs, Corvette, etc) come from the factory with synthetic. Also, the factory cannot deny you warranty coverage if you use ANY oil (dino or synthetic) that meets the requested API spec.

EDIT: If you use AMSOIL, they also have a warranty. If the motor fails and it's proven that the AMSOIL synthetic caused it, they will replace your motor.

I switched at 1000 kms to synthetic. Dealer said you don't need too till 6000 kms. It's not break-in oil, just normal oil. Left the original filter in.

Daniel knows what car I'm talking about! :-)

Sure it does... LOL,

Has 4 wheels, has 4 doors, has AWD, has an engine in the front, has a prop shaft connecting the tranny to the rear diff, has a turbcharged engine.

Only difference is, his is customized so it looks like a hatch and has a more rounded edges.

Hummmmmm
