Ok...so there's enough of you guys who beat on the 6 spds pretty hard here.

There's a Ver8 STi 6 spd sitting on the floor next to the car ready to go in.

What fluid do i put in it?

I hear everything from Extra-s to Valvoline to Redline to Motul.


I swore by Redline Shockproof in the 5 spd, and after taking them apart like 5 times said i wouldn't use anything else. But even redline themselves recommends against using it in the 6 spd. I do know of several people who do use it in the 6 spd and swear by it.

This Transmission is not going to have an easy life...as it'll do nothing by rally.



right now it's got some JDM fluid in it (half of it leaked out), which looks like ATF, but feels and smells like transmission fluid.

So what do you guys run? Steve? Joe? others?

p.s the jdm 4.44 5 spd is dead, no gears left on the rear pinion, no 3rd gear, and a hole in the side of the tranny case!

If you don't have to gear down to 1st on most courses, a pure Motul Gear 300 will probably be the least wear on your competition box with the best feel. Might also have problems getting it into 1st at Pierce Neige, but once it's warm it works great.

Motul Gear FF is supposed to resolve the synchro issue, but is much more expensive and I never tried it.

Else, the 1qt Redline MT90 and the rest your favourite 75W90 (we use Amsoil Severe Gear) is good as well. If you fiind you need better synchro engagement, increase the % of MT90.

JRP has the Redline cheap for SPDA members. Tashko or I can get the Severe Gear. $17 per qt taxes in at the moment.

Chris I pick mine up from Can-Jam, pre mixed with their blend. Its not really any more expensive then getting it and mixing it yourself. They have kept many a rally car alive so I am using theirs currently.

he'll be happy-happy to sell you some.

I've been using it exclusively for years...

Is the amsoil cheaper by the case (i got 2 cars to fill).

And why the mt-90?? just for the syncros? is the Amsoil "too slippery"?

I use the mix of Amsoil 75W90 and the Redline MT-90 as SteveD mentioned. The MT-90 is used to modify the friction in the tranny which modifies the friction in the oil.

Synchro's need friction so the more MT-90 the quicker you can spin up the receiving gears, to a point. If you need to do quick up and down shifts and you already have a 4 puck clutch and it's still not quick enough, just add more MT-90.

BTW: MT-90 is a GL-4 oil and even if it's used full strength, it's still fine.

I'm sure that the CanJam mix is good. By blending your MT-90 and Amsoil, you can customize the feel for the wear on your tranny and what you like.

have you guys thought of using some of the heavier Amsoil? like 75w140?

I am thinking that it may not thin out as much when it gets hot, and protect better during a serious beating?

I know that redline always said their lite shockproof was like a 75w140.

Redline told us that the problem with the shockproof is that when it gets put through the small holes in the transmission (i don't actually know if the holes are that small), the Shockproof will kind of get separated, and you might as well just be running 75w90NS. So not that it's bad...it's just you aren't going to see any benefit really.

I haven't heard feedback from any motorsports people who have, Chris. One chap told me he was using 75W140 in the rear diff on the street, and noticed no undesirable effects on the street. BUT...

75W140:

$18.25 per qt for case of 12 ($219)
$17.80 per qt for 5 gallon pail ($356)

75W110:

$16.50 per qt for case of 12 ($198)
$16.00 per qt for 5 gallon pail ($320)

Think i've decided to go with the Motul Gear 300 and run it straight. Managed to get a very good deal through a friend, making it less than all other options!

What should I use in my 5 speed? CanJam mix, dealer fluids (which is all I've used so far) or a different mix?
