I checked out a GC8 2.5RS on the weekend and am considering picking it up for a daily driver. It has ~220k on it and all the major work is up to date on it including the head gaskets. All work was performed by Subaru.

Are there any specific things I should be looking out for on these cars as known problem areas?

The test drive didn't indicate any major issues other than an aftermarket exhaust that's a bit too loud for my tastes.

Thanks SPDA!

The only real headache to look out for is the head gasket, but since that was taken care of, keep on checking the oil for consumption, Subies eat oil and about 1L / 5000 Km is normal. If it's eating too much oil, replace the PCV.

Now we're assuming that the car has not been modified (engine swap), and the tranny is original. Just don't put a 4 puck clutch in it, or you'll more than likely blow 3rd gear.

Forgot to mention, depending on the year, the rear wheel bearings used to go prematurely.

Nothing major mod-wise, mostly styling (STIi bumpers, grille and wing) and the clutch has been swapped for something a bit stiffer but it didn't grab like a puck-style one.

I'll keep an eye out on the wheel bearings as the car is a '99.

Any chance you can suggest a good mechanic near Richmond Hill that I can take the car to for a good inspection?

CanJam is up there, and are probably the best to take a GC for a checkup. Failing that, you can take it to Yosio near Yorkdale, he knows GC's in and out, but english is not his strong point. Yoshio will also point out any imperfection, he's major anal.
