My father-in-law wants to gift his 92 Camry with 162,000km on it to his daughter-in-law, but he's failed emissions with high NOX and was told that he needs a new cat for $985, plus $130 labour, $130 tax it's $1300. (No, I haven't shopped around on his behalf yet.)

The car does mostly short runs, regular 3 month dino oil changes at the dealer, plugs, wires, filter less than a year old. It's in fantastic shape... it's just 19 years old.

I'm going to try the obvious; running some Amsoil PI and Powerfoam Spray though to clean up the combustion chamber will help. Perhaps cleaning the pistons and heads will help drop the combustion temperatures which is supposed to be good for NOX. And I'll run it hard beforehand and leave it idling while we wait for the test. Any other suggestions based on the results below?

Has the car been driven hard for a couple tanks of gas? Maybe get the cats nice and hot and burn away some of the build up? Just a thought.

My wife's going to pick it up tomorrow, and drive it only in D3 (not overdrive D4) for the next couple of weeks. She has to do a couple of Brantford / Georgetown runs and that should help.

We only have until Nov. 22 to make it pass before looking at a catalytic converter.

Okay, so with a whopping investment of about $30 (1 x Amsoil Power Foam, 2 x Amsoil PI) and a couple of weeks of driving without overdrive, NOX was down to ... 0!

Oh, I also ran a few tanks of 87 (it always got 91) through and reset the ECU last night to hopefully retard the timing a little.

Idle HC: 17
Idle CO: .01
Dilution: 15.01

40km/h HC: 38 (!)
40km/h CO: 0.04
NO PPM: 0
Dilution: 15.04
PASS

I'm a little concerned about the HC at 40km/h increasing from 0 previously, but as I said, I just reset the ECU last night, so it's probably not good and learned yet. :-)

$1300 for a new cat on a car that was easily passable. I feel sorry for all of the seniors being ripped off by this program.

That's over the RCL though.

Assuming that you mean "road check limit"... it's not over for a 1992 Camry!
