How repairable is a rod knock on an old EJ22? Would I be looking at a rebuild/motor replacement? Is it possible to drop the oil pan and undo the connecting rod and replace the bearing only? Polish up the crank journal and cross fingers?

My first thought was motor replacement but I thought I'd check with the pro's.

Thanks

Rod knock is terminal. Rebuild required, no skimping. Usually caused by a spun bearing. Depending on how bad, there maybe debris all over and all the bearings are now scored.

You've had this confirmed as rod knock and not just Piston Slap at warm up? If so, I'm sorry to hear it, and yes, of course Joe is right.

Certainly not piston slap. Knocks at startup, goes away as the engine idles. As soon as there is a bit of throttle input it comes back (no load). Doesn't sound like it would make it more than a few miles before it would blow. It's not a minor noise.

I have an EJ22 from a 93 Legacy, I imagine it should go in a 97 Impreza OK. Any issues with OBDII on the newer car?
