Jeannie MacGillivary of MCO posts about the RWR:

Winter has come to the Lanark Highlands, and our back roads are a thing of beauty, winding over hills and into small valleys, with a light dusting of snow to give your winter tires a workout. Just the thing to light a fire in the heart of a rallyist!

You won’t want to miss out on the MCO Rideau Winter Rally this Saturday, January 21! It is the second event in the Ontario Road Rally Cup (ORRC) series. Please register at http://www.oldrallysport.on.ca/orrcentry.html.

The rally will be about 190 km in length, about 75% gravel. PLEASE NOTE that this will be a winter event on little-used but winter-maintained rural roads. Be prepared for winter conditions. This event will run into night-time, so make sure you have good lights.

Rally HQ is at the Perth Restaurant on 23 Gore Street in Perth, Ontario. Please see http://www.pbase.com/robert_ottawa/image/129242848and http://www.pbase.com/robert_ottawa/image/129242842..

You will note some changes from previous events, the first being a later start.

Registration opens at 3:00 p.m. Car 0 is out at 4:30 p.m., and will finish at about 8:00 p.m. The restaurant is staying open late for us.
Our Routemaster, Robert Roaldi, has been putting his considerable skills to the test to bring you fun and challenge.
As with last November's event, navigators will have to work a little for their pay. Robert is not planning on a brain buster and never attempts to get anyone lost, but you'll have to pay attention.

The Rideau Winter Rally is the second event in the ORRC series, and the first event in the 2012 MCO Doppelganger Rally Series.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday!

Who's heading to Perth for the rally tomorrow? Robert typically makes great use of the many fun roads in the area.

Ted and I will be there, and we hope to see a few more from SPDA.

It was a good rally! Well worth the drive to Perth! Who can resist Lanark Highlands roads after dark? Add on a no-error rally, navigation oriented instructions, fair but fun CAS, and it was a good night. Opal and I finished 1st Expert to lead the championship with 20 points.

It's almost 3am and I'm a wee bit tired, so I'll just post the results for now with a longer review later. Our new Rally Ambassador (Trevor) spent most of the night hauling FWD cars our of ditches and snow banks instead of focusing on competition. But, their 4th place will help the club with points.

Some of SPDA's Ottawa contingent did well in novice class. Results are attached!

Yes, we pulled half of our expert class competitors back onto the road, only to have them beat us in the end results. There should be some sort of "excessive charity" award for that.

Ted were doing fairly well, with only one real error up until finding Peter and Gary all-wheel-drive deep with their one-front-wheel-drive car, after sliding off the outside of an icy 90 degree left turn. After some digging, pushing, towing, snapping of said tow rope and eventually the assistance of another car, we were able to get them back on the road and on their way. We took an 18.5 minute time allowance at the next check point. Peter was wisely taking it easy on the icy roads after that, running a little below the target speeds, so Ted and I passed them to get back on time.

We found a second expert team, the Pye's, off the road in the following section. They weren't as deep and had a tow rope ready, so we only lost another three minutes to get them out. We took a 2.5 at the next CP. This is over the 19.5 total TA allowed, but we were hoping to get some leeway for providing assistance to other teams.

In the final time-to-turn section, a simple math error put us a kilometer off route. In trying to resolve the error, we were running dangerously close to the Max Late limit from the towing, and we were out of TA allowance. We decided to skip to the end of the rally to register a final time before Max Late, which resulted in missing CP8 and blew our chances for a decent finish.

Of note to other teams, the Maynards did well in Novice, taking 4th using their Rally Buick to great effect on the icy roads. Sandra used skills gained from a winter driving school from the previous weekend to proudly arrive early at three of the 8 checkpoints. Given the vehicle weight and road conditions, well done (despite the negative effect on your score). :-)
