Why might MRT performance consider it "...a lot more cost-effective to rebuild the 2000 STi engine with the 2.5L shortblock.." in the attached?

Hey, that's not a Subaru motor in the photo? :twitch: ;)

Sounds like he had oil starvation at the track. They don't say specifically, but my guess would be that there was enough damage from the spun bearing that it would have been too expensive to repair / sleeve the block and polish the crank compared to buying the new USDM 2.5L short block. If it was an open deck 2.0L, then it was a good financial decision to go to a new block from Subaru.

2.5L has it's own host of issues... primarily cylinder wall thickness, and then you're into the debate about 2.2L Closed Deck or not, and the 2.5L head gasket issues at higher power levels.

I'll let you know how this works out by the end of the year: http://www.outfrontmotorsports.com/engine_blocks.htm

You are such a smart man, Steve. I want to hang around you to learn everything.

How would I confirm what type of block my EJ205 2.0L twin-cam turbo is? Or are these closed deck blocks specialty items?

Your 2.0L is open deck. Closed 2.0L were a rare find from the first two gens of STi motors.

On the bright side, because of the wide cylinder walls of the 2.0L, head gasket problems will probably not be your issue. If your power ambitions are moderate, you should be good with the 2.0L.
